Alcohol Laws in Morocco

Morocco has extremely strict laws regarding driving under the influence of alcohol.

Legal Limit:

  • 0.02 g/L (0.002% BAC): This is effectively a "zero tolerance" policy.
  • Any detectable amount of alcohol in a breathalyzer or blood test is typically sufficient for prosecution.

Enforcement: Police frequently use checkpoints and breathalyzers. If you are involved in an accident and alcohol is detected, the legal consequences are severe, often involving immediate detention.

Consequences & Safety

Penalties: Driving under the influence can lead to:

  • Imprisonment (from months to one year).
  • Heavy fines (ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 MAD or more).
  • Suspension or withdrawal of the driving licence.

Religious & Cultural Context: Alcohol consumption is regulated. Public drunkenness is also a penal offence. Combining alcohol with driving is socially and legally unacceptable.

Recommendation: Do not drive after consuming any amount of alcohol in Morocco. Take a taxi ("Petit Taxi" or "Grand Taxi").
