BAC Calculator Australia – Blood Alcohol Limit and Driving Risks

Australian states enforce strict 0.05% BAC limits and zero tolerance for new drivers. Use this tool for education, not to judge if you can drive.

Estimate your BAC

Enter your details and drinks to see an approximate blood alcohol concentration. Results are only estimates and must not be used to decide if you can drive.

Use an approximate value if you are not sure. The estimate is sensitive to body weight.

This helps us compare your estimated BAC with commonly cited legal limits in your selected region.

Blood Alcohol Limits in Australia

Australia enforces strict alcohol limits which vary by driver licence type. Laws are consistent across most states (NSW, VIC, QLD, WA, SA, TAS, ACT, NT).

General Licence Holders:

  • Limit: 0.05% BAC
  • This applies to most full licence holders driving a standard car.

Learner, Provisional (P1/P2) & Professional Drivers:

  • Limit: 0.00% BAC (Zero Tolerance)
  • If you hold a Learner or Provisional licence, or drive a truck, bus, or taxi, you must have no alcohol in your system.

Random Breath Testing (RBT): Police in Australia can stop any vehicle at any time for a breath test, even if you are not driving poorly. RBT buses and patrol cars are common everywhere.

Penalties & Safety

Penalties: Exceeding the limit results in immediate licence suspension, heavy fines, and for high-range offences, mandatory interlock devices fitted to your car or imprisonment.

Standard Drinks: Australia uses the "Standard Drink" system (10g of alcohol). However, counting drinks is notoriously inaccurate because glass sizes and pour strengths vary.

Safest Choice: "Plan B" is the safest choice. If you drink, don't drive. Use rideshare, taxis, or public transport.

Australia Drink Driving FAQ

It is impossible to say exactly. A general rule of thumb often cited is 'two standard drinks in the first hour and one every hour after' for men, and less for women, but this is dangerous to rely on. Your body type and metabolism change the results significantly.
Refusing a breath test is a serious offence in Australia. You will typically be charged and face penalties similar to, or sometimes worse than, high-range drink driving.
Food slows absorption but does not stop alcohol from entering your blood. You can still reach a high BAC even after a heavy meal.
